Creating a Personal Safety Plan

Your safety is paramount to us at Unique Care Group. This guide outlines how to create a personal safety plan tailored to your needs, ensuring you’re prepared for any emergency.

Why a Safety Plan?

A safety plan is your go-to guide in emergencies. It lays out steps to take if you’re hurt, in danger, or need urgent help. Your plan will include actions for various scenarios, important contacts, and more.

Collaborating on Your Plan

Your safety plan should be a collaborative effort. It’s essential to involve people you trust, like family, friends, or your support worker. They can offer insights and ensure your plan covers all bases.

What to Include

  • Emergency Contacts: List who to call in different situations, including 000 for police, fire, and ambulance services.
  • Personalised Actions: Detail specific actions for scenarios you might face, such as what to do if there’s a fire or if a stranger comes to your door.
  • Accessibility: Keep your plan in an easily accessible spot and ensure it’s simple to read and understand.

Living in Group Homes

If you live in a group home or Specialist Disability Accommodation, familiarise yourself with the site’s emergency plans. Don’t hesitate to ask for a run-through of these plans to stay informed.

Practical Examples

  • Fire Safety: Should a fire occur, your plan might instruct you to leave the building immediately and call 000 from a safe location.
  • Stranger Safety: If a stranger comes to your door, your plan could advise not to open the door and to verify their identity safely, such as through a window.

Keep Practising

Review and practice your safety plan regularly. This repetition ensures the steps become second nature, allowing you to act quickly and effectively in real situations.
